Myakka is Florida’s Wild and Scenic River and the only state park designated this way by the Legislature of Florida. With over 70,000 acres of pure Florida wild land to paint, artists are never short of breath taking views. Myakka is one of the oldest and largest of Florida’s state parks. There are 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands to explore. There are tours and guides available for those that want to go deeper into the park. .
Myakka is a clear favorite of every landscape artist we have ever known. There are two lakes, miles of marshes, and ancient spreading oaks and palm forests to paint. Myakka’s great beauty is undisputed.
Artist paint respectfully here as we share the park with incredible wildlife. Feral pigs, key deer, and alligators that sometimes line the shore of the river are always around.
Alligators can run up to 30 miles an hour. Can you? If not, keep a safe distance from the shore and be aware of your surroundings. There is seldom an incident in the park. We want painters to know Myakka is a wild place and to be careful when they paint to stay safe and leave only footprints. Artists are grateful to share the land with this wonderfully diverse group of animals and birds.
There are facilities, parking, and even camping and cabins to rent. There are spots for viewing along several miles of paved road through the park. You will find a huge diversity of land and wildlife. Any artist could happily spend a lifetime of painting Myakka.
Myakka is one of Florida’s oldest and largest state parks. It is a treasure for everyone but a most special place for artists. No matter if you have a week to visit Sarasota to paint or a lifetime; you will find yourself always wanting to return to paint the beautiful Myakka State Park.
